The NPORS N204 Forward Tipping Dumper course is designed for individuals who require a recognised qualification to safely operate a forward tipping dumper within the construction and related industries.
Prior to training, we carry out a learner assessment to determine the appropriate training duration based on the candidate’s existing knowledge and experience. Candidates with little or no experience will undertake novice training, while experienced operators may be eligible for the one-day Experienced Worker Assessment (Test Only) route.
Course Content
This course provides learners with the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills required to safely and effectively operate a forward tipping dumper. Topics covered include:
- Understanding the construction industry, workplace hazards, and operator responsibilities
- Interpreting and understanding the manufacturer’s handbook for the machine being used
- Identifying major machine components and understanding their functions
- Locating and operating key controls safely and correctly
- Carrying out pre-operational inspections in line with manufacturer and legal requirements
- Identifying and maintaining suitable PPE for dumper operations
- Preparing and operating the forward tipping dumper safely and efficiently
- Conducting safety checks within the work area
- Attaching and setting trailers for operation
- Understanding environmental considerations on site
- Safe storage and transportation of implements and attachments
- Carrying out end-of-shift shutdown and parking procedures safely
Entry Requirements
Candidates must provide valid evidence to support their application where required. To obtain an NPORS Operator Card with the CSCS logo, candidates must have successfully passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touchscreen test within the last two years.
Candidates should also have a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please contact us in advance if you have any concerns regarding language or learning support requirements.
Training & Assessment
Training is delivered through a combination of classroom-based learning and practical hands-on exercises to ensure candidates are fully prepared for site operations.
Candidates will complete both theory and practical assessments during the course.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card.

By the end of this training course, the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a Slinger/Signaller
- Be able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation
- Be able to locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. Explain their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
- Be able to interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation
- Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non-serviceable items
- Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service
- Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads
- Set up exclusion zone explaining actions required for emergency actions, identifying any overhead hazards
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for a Slinger/Signaller
- Secure various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring load balance, security and integrity
- Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of location using different methods of communication
- Environmental considerations
- Carry out all out of service and securing procedures
